Wonton Soup is ready in under 15 minutes and is the perfect side dish to serve with your favorite Chinese take out!  Do you ever start to accumulate a bunch of food in your freezer, that you wonder why on Earth you ever bought this stuff? I do this all the time now that Aldi is here and they have so many delicious freezer foods to stock up on.  A couple of weeks ago, Asian food was on special, so I picked up a package of frozen chicken wontons. They’re good air-fried or in a simple soup such as this one. The wontons cook right in the broth so you don’t have to have another pan going to heat them up. Simple ingredients that are staples in my pantry: fresh chopped garlic (I buy this stuff by the jar full), ginger, chicken broth, and soy sauce. If you keep these items in your pantry you can whip on an easy simple soup in no time. ProTip: Whenever you have food you need to get rid of in your freezer just look up recipes online that require that ingredient! That is what I did for this soup. Sometimes I feel so overwhelmed (and I live alone) that I feel like I need to declutter my freezer. Instead of wasting it or throw it all out, find recipes to make with your freezer food online. Just you wait, freezer and fridge declutter will be the next latest craze! For example, right now I have way too much frozen fruit in my freezer so I’m making smoothies with it for breakfast in the morning. If you want the recipe for those, let me know in the comments below and I’ll post a few.

How to make Wonton Soup

Heat sesame oil in a small pot over medium-low heat. Add garlic and ginger, and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant; about 1-2 minutes. Add the soy sauce and chicken broth to the pot. Bring the broth to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, and add the package of frozen wontons. About 3 to 5 minutes. The wontons are ready when they float to the top of the broth. Serve immediately. Garnish the soup with chopped scallions. Serving size: 1 cup.

Tips for Wonton Soup

Wontons: This recipe uses already prepared frozen wontons if you have a recipe that you like for homemade wontons make those for this soup! I like semi-homemade hacks.  Instead of chicken broth sub miso broth! What is miso broth? Miso broth is made of niboshi (dried baby sardines), kombu (dried kelp), katsuobushi (thin shavings of dried and smoked bonito, aka skipjack tuna), or hoshi-shiitake (dried shiitake). From Wikipedia. It sounds weird, but it is delicious.
