Ingredients
2.5 pounds apples (gala, honey crisp, macoun, mcintosh, etc.)
2 tablespoons zest of half an orange
1 tablespoon zest of half a lemon
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
3/4 cup flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 cup oatmeal, old fashioned
1/4 pound butter, very cold
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Preparation
prehat oven to 350. butter 8x8 baking pan.
peel, core and cut apples into 1/2 to 3/4 inch chunks. Combine the apples with zests, juices, sugar and spices down to and including nutmeg.
to make topping combine flour, sugar, salt, oatmeal and cold butter in a bowl and cut, or use your fingers to work mixture until butter is approximatley the size of peas. scatter evenly over the apples.
place the crisp on a sheet pan and bake for one hour. check and bake longer until top is a golden brown and the apples are bubbly. serve warm.
