Instant Pot Vegan
Split Pea Soup
As a food blogger, I need to be organised and often the published date, is not the same as when I have recipe tested for you or written up what you are reading right now. After final recipe testing and final pictures with Dominic, I will mark it in my diary to write up the recipe and it will be added to the next lot of recipes that I need to get written in Microsoft Word. Then Kyle our eldest son will do extra graphics for it and then Dominic will spend a week loading up lots of recipes that I have written. We try to stay 6 weeks ahead of time, then if there is a family emergency then I know you will still have new instant pot recipes to try. With that said, I am here on the 19th November writing up your January recipe for instant pot vegan split pea soup! Living here in Portugal it is what I consider to be our first super cold day. A day when I can’t feel my fingers and wished I hadn’t been so frugal and paid out for central heating. The temperature has dropped down to single figures and 9c seems so cold compared to the summer of 45s. So, I am grateful that today, I have made way too much instant pot yellow split pea soup and that I can eat it to keep the cold out for today and beyond. I have already had 2 bowls of it and plan a third for supper later. Plus, it is wonderful for warming up my super cold hands.
Why Cook Split
Pea Soup In The Instant Pot?
Apart from wanting to treat you to a new delicious instant pot soup recipe, the main reason for cooking split pea soup in the instant pot, is because it is EASY. It is easy, lazy, convenient, nutritious, time saving and not to mention cheap to make. After all, like my grandparents I am frugal. Frugality and yellow split pea soup go hand in hand. If I wanted to recommend how to save money, then I would be shouting from the roof tops to make split pea soup. The first time I made it in the instant pot, I just couldn’t believe how much soup I had made. It was out of control and could feed a couple of pensioners for a week. Add favourite veggies, split peas and stock and you are all set.

Split Pea Soup Without Ham
I like ham but I also love my vegan food too. I often say to Dominic that if he wasn’t a meat lover that I would follow a vegan diet. In my teenage years I was a vegetarian and loved to indulge in as many vegetables as I possibly could. My grandad used to grow his own fruit and vegetables on his allotment, and I was always there, eating carrots direct from the soil after a quick wash. I never once missed my meat and I love it when I have a filling vegan meal as it helps me prove to Dominic that there are some delicious vegan dishes out there. So, if you are vegan or not, this split pea soup is perfect for detoxing during the flu or just as a great way to binge on some vegetables.
Instant Pot
Split Pea Soup With Potatoes
One essential ingredient in my instant pot split pea soup is serving it with potatoes. Potatoes become the cream, the ingredient that makes your instant pot split pea soup nice and creamy and thick. Without it, you will end up with what resembles a ragu, with more of a watery tomato base rather than a hearty vegan soup. Then at the end of the cooking process, blend your potato chunks and you will then have a wonderfully thick hearty split pea soup.
Instant Pot
Split Pea Soup No Soak
Our instant pot split pea soup is no soak. This means that unlike if you were making a classic split pea soup, that you don’t need to soak your peas before you cook with them. Give your yellow split peas a rinse under a cold tap first and then they are all set.

Split Pea Soup Accessories
When I make instant pot split pea soup, it is about being healthy and frugal. Reminding myself about when my grandparents did a huge pot of soup and how it fed several of us for several meals. In today’s recipe it made so much soup that it almost touched the max line of my 6 quart instant pot duo. Unless you are feeding 10 people at once setting, you need to be thinking about what is going to happen next with your plant based split pea soup. For me the perfect instant pot accessories are my spare inner pot for the instant pot and my silicone lid for my inner pot. Because of these two simple things, I can place my leftover split pea soup in the fridge, add the silicone lid and know that I can just reheat the next day. You’re also not creating an extra washing up and it can keep for up to 4 days in the fridge. Just grab your inner pot from the fridge when you next want some of your favourite split pea soup.
What Ingredients
& Gadgets Go Into Instant Pot Vegan Split Pea Soup?
There are 8 main ingredients that go into instant pot split pea soup:
Yellow Split PeasCarrotsOnionsCeleryPotatoesTinned TomatoesGarlicSeasonings
If you don’t already have an Instant Pot, then we have both the 6 quart Duo and the 8 quart duo in our kitchen as well as the Mealthy Multipot. Any type of electric pressure cooker will work well, but I recommend reducing the size of our recipe ingredients if using the mini as this is a full pot of pea soup! Apart from the yellow split peas, I would assume that most people will already have the ingredients in and won’t have to go to any specialist shops. This is the brand of Yellow Split Peas we used that we received as a sample to try out in our instant pot yellow split pea soup. BUT I believe they only sell in the UK, so if you are in the US we recommend this one.
How To Make Instant
Pot Split Pea Soup?
Making instant pot split pea soup is EASY and it is a case of a quick sauté and loading your ingredients into your instant pot pressure cooker. Once cooking has finished you are blending the potatoes to thicken up your instant pot soup into a super hearty thick and comforting soup.
Sauté first. Once you have prepped your vegetables you load them into the instant pot pressure cooker. You don’t need any oil because the tomatoes will stop the veggies from sticking to the bottom of your instant pot.Load up the rest of your ingredients and cook for 20 minutes. Add in natural pressure release and your split pea soup is ready to be thickened.Use a hand blender on the potatoes to thicken up your yellow split pea soup before serving.

Split Pea Soup Cooking Time
The cooking time for instant pot split pea soup is a lot less than you would expect. It takes JUST 20 minutes to cook from scratch. The reason it is 20 minutes and not a shorter cook time is because the instant pot is very full, and the split peas need to cook. As well as this we are using 10 minutes of natural pressure release to help the yellow split pea soup thicken and to retain the great flavour.
