Cookie Dough Ice Cream Maker Recipe. How to make your favourite Ben & Jerrys cookie dough ice cream using your ice cream maker. Not only is this Ben & Jerry’s copycat recipe amazing, but it is also much cheaper, fun to make at home and perfect for summer ice cream days.

Welcome to my copycat cookie dough ice cream recipe for the ice cream maker. Updated for the summer of 2020 after originally sharing it with you back in the June of 2016 and a favourite in the Milner house. Born in the 1980s and growing up in the 1990’s in Northern England meant that throughout my childhood I never tried cookie dough or even knew that such a thing existed. I never missed out on baked goods, it was just British baked goods rather than American and there was never a thing for cookie dough in England, well not back then. The first time I ever tried cookie dough was when Dominic introduced me to Ben & Jerry’s, and I tried their Ben & Jerrys Cookie Dough ice cream tubs. It was like love at first sight and a few years later with an update on my favourite British baking book, I noticed the inclusion of chocolate chip cookies. I tried them for the first time, and I was smitten and since then we have transformed them to air fryer chocolate chip cookies that we make regularly in the Milner house. When back in the summer of 2016 we worked our way through our favourite ice creams in our ice cream maker, it was expected that a copycat version of our favourite Ben & Jerry’s Cookie Dough would make the cut. We have updated it for you, and OMG I will update it every week as it’s the perfect excuse to get the ice cream maker out and the hand mixer and make a batch of cookie dough.

Cookie dough ice cream is a creamy vanilla ice cream that is loaded with raw cookie dough and sprinkles of milk chocolate. It can be loaded with as much or as little cookie dough, depending on how much of a thing you have for cookies. Dominic hates cookie dough and prefers cooked cookies, while I binge on cookie dough. If I am making it for Dominic, I will use less cookie dough or for me a LOT more.

If I am buying cookie dough ice cream the BEST will always be Ben & Jerry’s. It is delicious and amazing on so many levels. But homemade cookie dough and the winner goes to the ice cream I am showing you how to make today using your ice cream maker. You can use any brand of ice cream maker as they all do a similar job. Whether this is Cuisinart, Kitchenaid, Hamilton Beach or a non-branded one.

We have all heard those warnings, haven’t we? The ones about raw eggs and not being safe during pregnancy and for children. That the current generation can’t cope with them, yet when we were kids, we always licked the cake bowl that was loaded with raw eggs. Many people Google “can you eat cookie dough ice cream” because they are worried about it. So, let me tell you an interesting fact. The British version of chocolate cookie dough does not contain any eggs, therefore there are no raw eggs in this cookie dough ice cream, meaning that regardless of views it is 100% safe to eat.

The process of making homemade Ben & Jerry’s ice cream using an ice cream maker is SIMPLE:

You make a half batch of chocolate chip cookie dough and make into small balls and load into the freezer. You whisk together the egg yolks and the sugar until they are light and fluffy. Heat milk and cream in a pan and load it with vanilla essence. Combine the warm and the cold and warm up the eggs and the sugar. Load into the freezer for quick cooling. Churn your vanilla ice cream for 30 minutes. Once it has finished churning load into the ice cream maker your flake and your cookie dough that you have cut into quarters. Churn for 5 more minutes so that the chocolate and cookie dough has chance to fully mix. Load into containers and freeze for later.

The ingredients to make your own homemade Ben & Jerrys Cookie Dough are ingredients that you can easily buy from the supermarket.

What we did was make our favourite air fryer cookie dough and instead of air frying, we loaded them into the freezer instead. We have a favourite sheet pan that we use just for the freezer. We layer cookie dough rounds onto it, partly freeze and then cut into quarters ready for the ice cream maker. By doing a partial freeze it firms up the cookie dough and makes your cookie dough ice cream easier to make.

Growing up in England chocolate chips have never been a thing. Whenever I see them in supermarkets they are overpriced and often lack quality. What I find works better is either chocolate chunks or grated chocolate. Cookie dough ice cream without chocolate chips is also important if you have dental sensitivities as the chocolate chips clash with the cold ice cream. My favourite choice is using Cadbury’s Flake as its easy to break up and you can use slightly bigger chunks in place of chocolate chips.

I love the taste of both Ben & Jerry’s Cookie Dough and my own homemade cookie dough recipe made in the ice cream maker. Both do taste slightly different. Ben & Jerry’s has more cookie dough then I put in mine as I still love to taste the vanilla ice cream as well as the cookie dough pieces. My cookie dough pieces were also slightly smaller. The taste is just like a rich creamy vanilla ice cream with some chocolate cookie dough chunks. Because they have been partly frozen, they are perfectly shaped and are not messy, compared to when you lick out a cookie dough bowl.

No, it does not. All my fellow nut allergy suffers can unite in their love for cookie dough, knowing that this cookie dough ice cream is nut free. Both myself and my 18 year old son have a nut allergy and its one of the great things about making your own, is knowing exactly what is going into it.

We talked above about cookie dough having no raw eggs. But what about your cookie dough ice cream? Even though our homemade ice cream maker vanilla ice cream starts off with raw egg yolks among its recipe ingredients, they are cooked when you make the custard that forms the base of the vanilla ice cream. Meaning that if you are concerned about raw eggs i.e. if you are pregnant, that this ice cream recipe is very much safe to consume.

What I like to do with my leftover cookie dough, is to use it to make a cookie dough ice cream sandwich. You could use half of our recommended cookie dough mixture into your ice cream, or make a full bowl and then the leftovers can be made into cookie rounds that will make you the best cookie dough ice cream sandwich you have ever tried. What I do is follow our air fryer cookies recipe, then roll out my cookie dough with biscuit cutters and then cook the cookie dough and then I have the correct rounds to make a cookie dough sandwich. Then wait for them to cool as otherwise the ice cream will melt way too fast, then load my ice cream in between two cookie rounds. They are amazing EVERY SINGLE TIME and great alternative to having a bowl of cookie dough ice cream.
