Air Fryer Chinese Chicken Wings

Air Fryer Chinese Chicken Wings in my opinion, is one of the best things to ever cook in the air fryer. Well after Air Fryer French Fries. I love how crispy air fryer chicken wings end up and how easy they are to cook and prepare. You can easily alter your air fryer chicken wings depending on what seasoning and marinade takes your fancy. For example, in this Air Fryer wings recipe today we’re showing you how to make Chinese chicken air fryer wings. Here in Portugal we pay just over 1 Euro for a packet of chicken wings from the supermarket. We will often bulk buy them and then whenever we have the urge for air fryer chicken wings, we know we can just go to the freezer and grab some.

Marinated Chicken Wings

The best bit is getting your hands dirty and making a delicious marinade to prep your air fryer chicken wings. In today’s recipe it is all about Chinese Chicken Wings which is so easy to marinate. You simply grab a big bowl, add in your marinate ingredients, give it a stir, add in your chicken wings and mix it up. Then place your marinated chicken wings in the fridge for an hour so that the flavour of the chicken wings can get even better!

Wings Frozen Or Thawed?

In our Air Fryer Chinese Chicken Wings recipe, we’re using thawed chicken wings. It works much better than frozen and your marinade is easier to mix, and it means the chicken wings are more tender. You can of course cook air fryer frozen chicken wings too if you prefer, or if you have forgotten to get them out of the freezer.

Air Fryer Chicken

Wings Dry Rub

In today’s recipe we are using a wet rub and placing the air fryer chicken wings into a cake pan so that the sticky marinade doesn’t make a mess in the air fryer. But you can also use a quick dry rub if that is what you prefer. You can also make a dry rub for your chicken wings and then add barbecue sauce over them once they are cooked. It saves using a cake pan and still gives you that delicious sticky taste.

Wings Vs Deep Fryer

The biggest debate with the air fryer is how the food compares to deep frying. Well think of it as less fatty, a bit like if you used kitchen towels to remove the fat from your food when it cooked in the deep fryer. I find that chicken wings in the air fryer taste much better than the deep fryer but still have that deep-fried deliciousness. Plus think of all those calories that you’re saving. You’re literally swapping deep fried for a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil!

Chinese Chicken Wings Time & Temp?

For cooking air fryer Chinese chicken wings, I recommend 22 minutes at a medium temperature. This allows you to be hands free when you’re cooking and means you don’t need to keep checking on them. They also cook for this long because they are in an inner container within the air fryer.

How To Cook

Chinese Chicken Wings In The Air Fryer?

To cook Chinese Chicken Wings in the air fryer it starts by preparing the marinade that you’re going to use. My favourite Chinese marinade is made up of the following main ingredients:

Soy SauceHoneyExtra Virgin Olive OilGarlicChinese 5 SpiceBlack Pepper

That is just 6 simple ingredients that many of us have in our kitchen cupboard already. The combination of ingredients is perfect because the honey gives it the sticky texture, the soy sauce means you don’t need to add salt, the olive oil helps make the chicken wings crispy and the Chinese 5 spice, garlic and pepper gives it the delicious Chinese flavour. After I have made my marinade and mixed it in a bowl, I add in the chicken wings and mix well with my hands. Its important you use your hands as you want the chicken well coated. It is also important you wash your hands before and after as you are handling raw chicken. It is also a great way to get kids helping you. Our son Jorge who is 2 loves to mix the chicken wings and would be upset if we didn’t involve him. The chicken wings can then marinate in the fridge in the bowl for an hour. After the chicken wings have marinated add them to a cake pan in your air fryer and its time for them to cook. I recommend this cake pan. It is perfect fit for the air fryer and great for when you’re cooking things that are sticky. And that is it!
