Air Fryer Calzone

This air fryer calzone is a fun use out of your leftovers, but it is not a traditional calzone. When I think of a traditional calzone, I think of the Italian restaurant that was at the bottom of my street as a kid. They did amazing homemade garlic breads and a yummy cheese calzone that I would share with my mum. Even though the calzone did not look that big, because it’s a pizza flipped over into a pie shape, me and my mum could never manage to finish it. I love that with a calzone you can use any leftovers you have, in the same way you would load leftovers into a pie. But instead of a pie it’s made using pizza dough that has been sealed up. But today’s calzone is not a traditional one, because we are making it with our air fryer pie crust instead of our bread maker pizza dough. You may be wondering why? Well I love Thanksgiving hand pies and I love the way a calzone shapes together. So its half calzone and half hand pie. The best of both worlds. You can use leftover pastry and combine it with leftovers from Thanksgiving, Christmas or even your roast dinner. Whatever you have that you know tastes good!

My Leftover Turkey Pot Pie

Yesterday on the blog I shared with you our updated air fryer turkey pot pie. It was delicious. But I still had leftover pie crust and leftover pie filling to use up. I call this my leftovers of my leftovers. Because I have already made something delicious with my leftovers and now, I am all about reusing what I didn’t use and making it into something else. Like I do with Monday Pie where I take what is left from leftover Monday pie and transform it into Tuesday carbonara. Leftover turkey calzone works well because:

You do not need as much filling as goes into a pieYou can roll out your odds and ends of pastry and make into mini piesYou can cook a few in the air fryer at once and its not as time consuming

Can You Air Fry Calzones?

Yes, you can. Either traditional calzones made with our pizza dough, or this pastry alternative cook very well in the air fryer. What I like to use are these pie cutters, or as us Brits call them pasty makers. You roll out your pie crust into them and then add a layer to one side of them. Then push them over and you will get perfectly looking calzone or hand pies: You can use any filling you like in them. Just remember not to overfill them. Otherwise the filling falls out of the sides and they just don’t work very well. You can use any filling you like in them. Just remember not to overfill them. There is a little more to it than that, but those are the simple basics!
